Name: Princess Luna
Canon: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic / CRAU from Revenance
Canon point: Post Season 4 / end of Revenance
Appearance: Sparklehorse
Age: Canon is unclear in anything except that she’s over a thousand. I figure maybe a couple thousand.
Gender: Female
Personality: In the past, Luna's jealousy and bitterness over ponies' preference for her sister's day drove her to become Nightmare Moon and try to cast Equestria into eternal night. She is no longer that wicked mare of darkness, but her desire for love and acceptance remains her driving force. She feels a great amount of guilt for her actions as Nightmare Moon and wishes to make amends by working to win the love of her subjects fairly. Unfortunately, having been on the moon for the last thousand years has left her even more out-of-touch with her populace than before. Time has worn away some of her more antiquated speech patterns, though she still tends to slip into "thees" and "thous" when emotional or trying to be formal. Therefore, her behavior can still seem overly rigid and harsh to modern ponies accustomed to her sister's more diplomatic ways.
She doesn't take rejection well at all, and it often triggers her somewhat fearsome temper, which only drives her subjects even further away. On some level, she views this rejection as inevitable, having never been very popular. By this point, she almost expects to be distrusted. But she hasn't entirely given up, and she's willing to try changing her approach; she just needs some guidance. Though Twilight Sparkle's aid resulted in quite a few mishaps, she remained willing to follow even the strangest of the young mare's plans and was immensely grateful to everypony who helped her along the way. Really, anyone who accepts her as a friend will very quickly earn her loyalty and affection, perhaps because she has so very few of them to begin with.
Luna is a creature of strong emotions, which can just as easily result in great enthusiasm instead of anger or sorrow, often all in quick succession. While quick to wrath, she does cool down quickly enough to realize when it was unwarranted. If so, she'll feel terrible and try to seek forgiveness. If, however, she feels has been truly wronged, she's very likely to hold a long grudge; doubly so, if someone she cares about was insulted or injured. Truthfully, she's a good friend to have, just a little inexperienced socially. Though she tends to fall back on courtly etiquette and her traditional Royal Canterlot Voice when nervous or upset, once she relaxes she proves to be very friendly and kind. This new modern era provides strange new opportunities for casual socialization and even fun with her subjects, and though she's still getting used to the idea, she enjoyed her first taste of it immensely.
The one area where she is entirely comfortable and at ease with her subjects is the world of dreams. There, she is in total control. Perhaps more importantly, she is also fulfilling a duty that only she can do. Celestia raised the moon in her absence, but she could never enter dreams like Luna can. Therefore, Luna takes a great deal of pride in this station, and does her best to provide personal aid to as many ponies plagued with nightmares as possible. Being especially fond of children in the waking world, she often gives them precedence, but adults are still likely to receive a nightly visit. She's also prone to practicing forms of harsh lessons here, as she is equally capable of visiting nightmares upon others if she feels they are in need of correction in their waking lives. These are always special cases, though, and often personal; she hardly keeps tabs on the current karma count of every single one of her subjects.
She takes an equal amount of pride in being a ruler again. While this can mean that she is proud and quick to take offense, she views ruling as a matter of responsibility rather than authority, and is very protective of her subjects. This protection occasionally extends to persecuted people of other countries as well; while she and Celestia were co-rulers, they had something of a history of dethroning tyrants, even those that weren't currently threatening anyone other than their own people. Luna tends to think little before butting into someone else's business, particularly if she thinks there's danger involved.
History: Wiki!
Luna was drawn into the so-called Realm of Dreams immediately after her Nightmare Night visit to Ponyville in canon. Being herself the Princess of Dreams, she was offput but immediately decided to assume some level of responsibility for keeping the other arrivals safe and maintaining defenses against the realm’s native Nightmares. Without her history dogging her or the shadow of her sister, she was much quicker to blossom socially and made a great many friends, including Agent Washington of the Freelancers and Ventus, a young human whom she unofficially adopted after witnessing him clashing with his previous guardian.
The mysteries behind their entrapment involved a lot of traveling between dream worlds, including one modeled after Ponyville. Luna both enjoyed visiting this one and was deeply upset by the appearance of a Nightmare mimicking Nightmare Moon. Her friends accepted her past, however. She lost many while there, including Ventus, but she was able to pull through with the help of her friends and Dream Eaters. Her sister also arrived – though by that point, Luna was already confident enough with the others not to withdraw socially.
Before anything could truly be solved, however, she awoke in her home world with her memories fully intact. Celestia had been brought from a later point in time, so she kept the entire matter to herself for the time being and began to spend her spare time studying methods of magical travel between dimensions; she was unwilling to abandon her humans, and she knew that many of them came from dire circumstances. This work never came to much – certainly never allowed her to reach any of her former companions – but she kept it up nonetheless.
Aspirations: Luna’s strongest aspiration is to be well-liked and respected by others. She wants to be a strong leader and protect her people. More specifically, she also wants to master the power to keep her friends from other worlds.
Fears: Relapse, mostly. She does not want to turn back into Nightmare Moon. She’s also generally afraid of screwing up and losing the friends she’s gained.
Inventory: Just her regalia
Magic: Water
Reason: The moon controls tides! Plus, she tends to be pretty aggressive in fights, so the lack of immediate offensive capability will force her to slow down somewhat.
RP samples:
Sample One: Luna hides and sulks about Ven’s disappearance
Sample Two: Luna discovers Ponyville in the dream world, and promptly has to walk Agent Washington through ponyhood
Notes: I see Celestia retained just enough telekinetic ability to pick up objects without resorting to her mouth; can I assume the same will hold true here?
