Since Discord tended to play havoc with the solar cycles, I figure that the modern calendar system in Equestria was established in the early days of Celestia and Luna's rule, when both were already adults, so even they probably only have estimates. She would say roughly three thousand.Reference:http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Princess_LunaSetting:
Equestria is a diarchy, ruled in equal part by both Luna and her older sister, Celestia. Celestia is responsible for raising the sun and bringing day to the land; Luna, meanwhile, raises the moon and stars to usher in the night. Her responsibilities also include watching over the dreams of her people. She can enter any sleeping pony's dream and alter them, but she only does so when nightmares are preying upon them. She seeks to teach her subjects to grow and face these nightmares down on their own, but until they can do so, she will be there to protect them. While there are lesser nobles around Canterlot, My Little Pony is oddly not a show focused on political intrigue, so their function in governance is unclear. The rule of the Princesses, however, would appear to be absolute and uncontested. A third Equestrian princess, Twilight Sparkle, was recently crowned, but her role in governing is currently unknown.
Seeing as how the show has been pretty slice-of-life so far, though, and will likely want to keep some kind of status quo, I doubt it'll be great at all. No little kid wants to watch royal court intrigue. If the land suffers under any iron grip, however, it is that of ponykind itself. Everything is managed in Equestria, from the wildlife to the weather. Ponies take care of wild animals, control when and where it will rain or be sunny and for how long, and even manually change the seasons by moving clouds and arranging for plants and animals to be in the correct places at the correct times. And, of course, the cycle of day and night is personally managed by the ruling princesses. This is seen as ordinary, to the point that lands without such micromanagement of natural processes are deeply frightening and disturbing to most ponies. Luna herself, having grown up during Discord's reign, is not so easily bothered.
Equestria has undergone four notable phases. The first was the rule of the Three Pony Tribes. These tribes, divided along racial lines, had warred extensively with each other while living in the lands to the north. Their strife brought on a plague of wendigos, spirits of ice and snow that fed upon hatred. When their lands became frozen and unlivable, the tribes ventured south. Learning that cooperation was key to fending off the threat, they made peace and founded Equestria as a unified nation where all three races could live together in harmony.
Some time following this, Equestria was taken over by Discord. Discord, a draconequus, appears to be the only member of his species, and is known only as the Spirit of Chaos. He is nigh-omnipotent, and ruled unchallenged until Celestia and Luna discovered the keys to his defeat: the Elements of Harmony. Equestria then became a diarchy, with the two Royal Sisters ruling. Luna's rebellion, war with her sister, and subsequent imprisonment on the moon cut this phase short, however, leading into Celestia's thousand-year monarchy. Currently, the nation could be said to be in a new age, with both princesses once again ruling.
There is only one other nation known in canon: the Crystal Empire, to the north. Its ruler, Princess Cadence, grew up in Equestria under Celestia's wing and wed the captain of Celestia's guard - suffice to say, relationships are good. Both countries have had conflicts with the changelings, a race of insect-like, shapeshifting equines that feed on the love of others. Their current location is unknown, as well as if Queen Chrysalis (the leader of the attackers) represents the entire race or simply a faction. There are also dragons living to the south, most likely without an overarching political structure, and a probable gryphon nation across the eastern sea.
I like to call it Eagleland, because puns. Building off that premise, it is a monarchy with friendly relations to Equestria, though the two nations have warred in the distant past, when Equestria was young. There has also been mention of Tartarus, a location somewhere near Ponyville where monsters are held, which is guarded by Cerberus the three-headed dog. Information on this place, however, is
sadly lacking.
I would say, however, that any monsters there were probably created by Discord and locked away by Celestia and Luna following his reign, as they do with most of their enemies.Other sentient species living within Equestria include cows, donkeys, mules, gryphons, dragons, minotaurs, and zebras. While some of these are met with fear and superstition by ordinary ponies, there is no evidence to indicate that they are in any way treated differently by law.
PoniesEquestria is home to four different races of ponies: earth, pegasus, unicorn, and alicorn. Earth ponies are known for their strength, endurance, and ties with the land and nature. They are responsible for the vast majority of the food produced in Equestria. Pegasi have wings and a natural capability to manipulate clouds and weather patterns; they oversee the weather for the country and ensure that each region receives a balanced amount of sun and rain. Unicorns have horns and magic. Each unicorn generally has one specific spell they can perform well, related to their special talent, as well as a basic telekinetic ability. While certain generalizations can be made about the different races and their jobs/status within Equestrian society, the overriding factor is cutie marks. Any pony can work in any field, so long as they are sufficiently good at what they do.
AlicornsAlicorns are a kind unto themselves. There are currently four in existence: Celestia, Luna, Cadence, and Twilight Sparkle. Alicorn possess the abilities of all three pony races, bearing a larger and stronger body, wings, and a horn.
Celestia and Luna are responsible for raising the sun and the moon, respectively, maintaining the cycle of night and day in Equestria. While Celestia is capable of raising both bodies, she could not raise the sun without Luna's consent when she became Nightmare Moon, and was instead forced to augment her powers with the Elements of Harmony to achieve victory. Since they are most likely equal in strength, Luna could probably also raise the sun if it became necessary, but this is unlikely to ever occur. The sisters are known to be over a thousand years old, and flashbacks of roughly a hundred years show Celestia looking exactly the same as she does in the modern day, implying that the pair is immortal, or at least have a lifespan far exceeding that of normal ponies.
Cadence and Twilight are new alicorns, no older than any pony at the moment. They present several differences from the Royal Sisters. Neither possesses an ethereal mane like the sisters, nor do they control vital functions of the world. They were born as a pegasus and a unicorn respectively, and became alicorns through mastering the magic of love and friendship. Celestia was present for both ascensions, which took place on a separate plane of existence, but as she was unaware of Cadence's existence prior to her appearance in this plane, she is most likely not herself responsible for the creation of new alicorns. Word of God states that Twilight, at least, will live no longer than the average pony, and she and Cadence both age at normal rates.
Since Celestia and Luna's origins are never fully explained, the differences between the two alicorn pairs may suggest that while the latter two became alicorns via their own merit, the sisters were born that way.Cutie MarksA cutie mark is a mark earned by most ponies in adolescence. It appears on both hind flanks after they discover and accept their special talent in life, and represents said talent in handy pictorial form. For example, as Luna's talent is raising the moon to bring night, her cutie mark is a crescent moon on a dark field. Cutie marks also seem to be intrinsically intertwined with a ponies' destiny; Applejack received her mark not when she realized she was good at apple farming, but when she accepted that her true path in life lay with her family and her farm. All six of the current bearers of the Elements of Harmony also received their marks on the same day, implying that they were somehow cosmically linked.
Cutie marks do not define a pony's sole talent, merely what they feel to be their particular calling in life. Ponies inevitably gravitate towards jobs that fulfill their talent in one way or another, making Equestrian society based largely on merit. Ponies work in a field because they are good at it and enjoy it; very few are ever shown to be dissatisfied with their place in life. When they cannot fulfill their talent or feel that it has been rejected by others, ponies of many different temperaments are often shown to go a little crazy.
The Elements of HarmonyThe Elements of Harmony were first used by Celestia and Luna to overthrow Discord, and were most likely discovered by the pair. They are six gemstones representing the virtues of Honesty, Loyalty, Generosity, Kindness, Laughter, and Magic. Magic is the force that binds the other five together and will only appear when the others have found proper bearers. Given the show's title, it could also be said to represent Friendship.
The current Bearers of Harmony are Twilight Sparkle, Celestia's student, and her five friends, each of whom holds one Element. The division of Elements between the Royal Sisters is unknown. Though the precise number appears to be unimportant, the Elements do require multiple ponies to operate correctly; when Celestia used them alone against Nightmare Moon, they imprisoned her in the moon rather than performing their intended job of purifying her and were subsequently rendered inert until new Bearers were found.
It also seems likely that this kind of disharmonious usage causes a powerful backlash. The area around the old castle, where Celestia and Luna's final battle likely took place, is now the Everfree Forest. Here, nature runs wild and free, resisting the control exerted by ponies over the rest of the landscape; essentially, it lacks the harmony of the rest of the world. Additionally, transitioning to new bearers appears to cause the power of their enchantments under the previous bearers to fade; while Discord and King Sombra remained solidly imprisoned for thousands of years after their defeat by the Royal Sisters, both escaped within a year of each other after Twilight and her friends took up the mantle and had to be defeated once more by them.
Personal History:Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, ponykind was ruled by a draconequus known as Discord. A spirit of pure chaos, Discord was a cruel and heartless king. He acted only upon his own whims and saw his subjects as toys for his own personal amusement, and so the ponies suffered greatly under his rule. One day, two sisters harnessed the magic of the Elements of Harmony and overthrew the draconequus, encasing him in stone.
The two sisters then became the new princesses of Equestria, ruling together and bringing harmony to the land ravaged by Discord's rule. The eldest, Celestia, used her magic to raise the sun at dawn. The younger, Luna, brought out the moon to begin the night. Thus, the two sisters created balance for their kingdom and their subjects, as well as driving other evils from the land, such as the tyrannical King Sombra who had enslaved the Crystal Empire to the north. But as time went on, Luna became resentful. The ponies loved the day her sister brought forth, but shunned and slept through her lovely night. One night, the younger princess refused to lower the moon to make way for the sun. Celestia tried to reason with her, but the darkness in Luna's heart had turned her into a wicked mare of darkness: Nightmare Moon, who vowed to shroud her kingdom in eternal night. Reluctantly, the sun princess once again took up the Elements of Harmony and banished her younger sister to the moon - but not permanently.
A thousand years later, when the stars were once again aligned, Nightmare Moon returned to Equestria, defeated her sister, and brought about nighttime eternal. Nighttime eternal lasted approximately a few hours. Six friends became the new bearers of the Elements and once again used them against Nightmare Moon, this time returning her to her normal self. Luna, remorseful, made peace with her sister and returned to rule once again at her side.
But the problems that had plagued her a millennium before did not simply vanish. She was not seen again until Nightmare Night, the festival dedicated both to candy and to the fear of Nightmare Moon. Luna sought to convert this festival to a celebration of the night instead, but her antiquated ways only frightened the ponies of Ponyville. Though she tried many times to befriend them, she was rejected once too many and finally lost her temper, declaring that the holiday would be cancelled forever. Luckily, Twilight Sparkle, Celestia's student, was there to help her adjust to modern customs and learn about "fun". Eventually she found acceptance and even admirers, and happily reinstated the holiday. Following this, she adapted more and more to modern life, a feat much aided when she took up her duties as the guardian of dreams once more.
When Canterlot came under an unknown threat, she aided her sister in maintaining the defenses, personally keeping watch over the city at night. She did not stay there during the day, however, and therefore was not actually present when the changelings attempted to invade, nor when their Queen personally struck down her sister. Luna took her absence there poorly, and later tried to insist that she would personally handle the reappearance of King Sombra and the Crystal Empire. The matter was, once again, resolved by Twilight Sparkle. Luna had expressed doubts that testing Twilight in this way was wise, but this would seem to be more from concern for the mare than jealousy or distrust, especially considering their earlier bond. Indeed, when Twilight was made an alicorn and crowned Princess, she seemed quite pleased to attend the ceremony.
Personality:In the past, Luna's jealousy and bitterness over ponies' preference for her sister's day drove her to become Nightmare Moon and try to cast Equestria into eternal night. She is no longer that wicked mare of darkness, but her desire for love and acceptance remains her driving force. She feels a great amount of guilt for her actions as Nightmare Moon and wishes to make amends by working to win the love of her subjects fairly. Unfortunately, having been on the moon for the last thousand years has left her even more out-of-touch with her populace than before. Time has worn away some of her more antiquated speech patterns, though she still tends to slip into "thees" and "thous" when upset or trying to be formal; however, her behaviors can still seem overly rigid and harsh to modern ponies accustomed to her sister's more diplomatic ways.
She doesn't take rejection well at all, and it often triggers her somewhat fearsome temper, which only drives her subjects even further away. On some level, she views this rejection as inevitable, having never been very popular. But she hasn't
entirely given up, and she's willing to try changing her approach; she just needs some guidance. Though Twilight Sparkle's aid resulted in quite a few mishaps, she remained willing to follow even the strangest of the young mare's plans and was immensely grateful to everypony who helped her along the way.
Luna is a creature of strong emotions, which can just as easily result in great enthusiasm instead of anger or sorrow. Truthfully, she's just a little inexperienced socially. Though she tends to fall back on courtly etiquette and her traditional Royal Canterlot Voice when nervous or upset, once she relaxes she proves to be very friendly and kind. This new modern era provides strange new opportunities for casual socialization and even
fun with her subjects, and though she's still getting used to the idea, she enjoyed her first taste of it immensely.
The one area where she is comfortable and at ease with her subjects is the world of dreams. There, she is in total control. Perhaps more importantly, she is also fulfilling a duty that only she can do. Celestia raised the moon in her absence, but she could never enter dreams like Luna can. Therefore, Luna takes a great deal of pride in this station, and does her best to provide personal aid to as many ponies plagued with nightmares as possible. She's learned that the formality her station once held is no longer required, but this has not diminished her importance any in her own eyes. While this can mean that she is proud and quick to take offense, she views ruling as a matter of responsibility rather than authority, and is very protective of her subjects.
Though she has no particular association with the cycle of life and death in Equestria, Luna is the undisputed keeper of dreams. Upon hearing that she is in what may be considered a dream world, therefore, she will immediately attempt to influence it herself. Upon finding that she cannot bend it to her will as she would a normal dream, she will conclude that strange magical forces are doubtless at work. Whether or not she even accepts it as a dream remains to be determined; however, she will definitely feel a sense of responsibility towards the others unwillingly drawn into this state. Her job of dream-watching is one she prizes highly, something she can serve her subjects in that her sister cannot, and though this is an entirely different situation that currently involves no ponies, it would be unbefitting of a Princess to leave others stranded in such a state simply because they are of different nations. She will attempt to see to it that other characters are taken care of, particularly children and anyone she comes to consider a friend.
Being a ruler of a powerful nation, Luna considers herself equal in status to any Emperor, and will be quite offended at the presumption inherent in dragging her from her people and her duties for
the Emperor's business. Equestia has a history of interfering for the protection of other nations, and had she been consulted she and her sister may very well have looked into providing aid (or more likely sent Twilight Sparkle to deal with it), but the fact that all courtesy was ignored will ruffle her feathers for some time. Nonetheless, she will seek to remain on at least civil terms with the ruling class of Tu Shanshu. Equestria has enjoyed over a thousand years without war, and she will not act in any way to risk that.
She will not, however, take this attitude to outright support of the Emperor. Equestria, and its ruling sisters in particular, also have a history of overthrowing tyrants, and if she sees something she feels is wrong she will not hesitate to protest.
Appearance: Luna stands at least a head taller than the average pony.
By my own personal estimates, this would put her at around six feet in height, not including her horn. She has a dark blue-violet coat and aqua eyes. Her mane and tail resemble the night sky, dark blue twinkling with stars, and wave slightly even in still air. Her cutie mark, on both hind flanks, is a white crescent moon on a black field. Typically she wears a black crown and peytral, the latter with an image of her cutie mark on it, as well as sparkly silver shoes.
Abilities:As an alicorn, Luna has tremendously strong magic. Most notably, she raises the moon and the stars each night; she is also responsible for entering her subject's dreams as they sleep and helping them fight their nightmares. Within dreams, she has total control of dream elements, and can banish or alter them at will. In canon, she has also been seen summoning thunderstorms, transfiguring objects into apparently living creatures, altering her own shape, and using general light/magic beams in combat. It's reasonable to assume she can also teleport, as unicorns below her skill level have been seen doing so, but she would require either a line of sight or a high level of familiarity with her destination to do so safely. As all unicorns, she also uses telekinesis rather than her hooves to manipulate objects, and can probably lift anything lighter than a celestial body.
Luna also possesses the abilities of the pegasus and earth pony races. She makes much more frequent and obvious use of her pegasus magic than other alicorns, owing primarily to her fondness for lightning and thunder. Even as Nightmare Moon, lightning was a favored weapon, and she still summons storms simply on a dramatic whim. As all pegasi, she can stand on clouds or push them about. Her earth pony attributes, meanwhile, present themselves in her physical strength; she has been seen cracking stone with a stomp of her forehoof, and can shout loudly enough to blow ponies back from her. She may possess the "green hoof" common to the race as well, but since princesses very rarely have time to garden she's never been able to tell.
Inventory:Her royal regalia: a black crown and peytral inscribed with her cutie mark, and silver shoes.
Suite:I think a two or three-story apartment in the Fire Sector, provided she can throw out absolutely all the furniture and redecorate. It's upholstered in
animal skin, and this is
barbaric and sickening. She is a Princess and has grown used to living comfortably; plus, the extra space will be helpful for maneuvering in a building that
was intended for wingless bipeds.
In-Character Samples:Third Person:Luna woke with the dawn, and promptly threw a wing over her eyes.
In Equestria, she was the princess of the night. She rose with the moon, and slept at sunrise. Here, though, she had no Night Court to oversee; maintaining her nocturnality would only serve to further alienate herself from those she was trapped here with. But that did
not mean she had to be happy about it. It felt unnatural, seeing day change from night without having any involvement in the process herself, and she still had not gotten used to seeing her moon and stars ascend without her.
Well. Not
hers. They didn't seem to belong to much of anypony, here.
The alicorn rose, stretching her wings and once again resolving to get a larger bed as soon as she had the money. Throughout all her long life, she had never had to work for money before. Luckily, it was proving quite simple. The kedan had no magic. She did, and could lift remarkably heavy loads with it. The results were more than satisfactory. And it was good, because it gave her the time to focus her time on her
true work – getting everypony out of this place.
It was a pity she was getting next to no information from her magical scans, but she had made progress! She had friends! Even if no one here respected her crown, they also didn’t know her history – it was a fair trade, in her opinion. Celestia always did say that friendship was the greatest magic there was. She was ordinarily alone in nightmares, but no longer, and they would all work this out together, no matter how long it took.
Network:[The video comes on to reveal an alicorn gazing seriously at the screen, head held proudly and wings slightly spread. It took her several practice runs to ensure that she was working the machine correctly; of course she wouldn't risk talking to anypony else until she had. Now, though, she is the picture of cool, calm royalty. Yes.] I am Luna, Princess of Equestria and the Moon, bringer of night and keeper of dreams. I know not by what power or authority this
Emperor hath brought us hither, but I care not. I
shall return to my people, and I swear that I shall see all of thee returned to thine. Now, I pray that thou wilt be willing to share whatever information thou hast gathered about our plight?
[After a moment, she adds in a quieter tone:] ...also, should any Equestrians be present, stay where thou art. I shall come to thee.
